Chapter Thirty-Eight: Making Contact with the SOG

Gunnery Sergeant Wolf Mathison, USMC

It had stopped raining and the birds were waking when Mathison nudged Stathis. The colonel commissar was moving among his people, making sure they were awake and checking with them. Watching Feng stop at each of the ODTs, Mathison realized how smooth he was, like he actually cared. If it wasn’t for the uniform and social fascist ideology, Mathison could almost appreciate Feng because he was better than a lot of Marine officers.

What would it be like to serve under such a man? How fanatical was he? Or would the other officers and NCOs make things unbearable with their ideology? You could tell a lot about an officer by the body language they displayed around their men. Mathison realized Feng was a master as he crouched next to Corporal Stassi, nodded at something the corporal said, then reached out to pat the corporal on the shoulder. It was hard to read a person’s body language in battle dress, especially with trauma plates, but Feng managed to convey kindness and concern. Mathison could almost believe it if he hadn’t seen Feng completely devoid of emotion in other situations.

Too many officers gave orders and expected them to be carried out without question or thought. Enlisted men were nothing more than pawns to be moved around a chessboard. There were still plenty of good ones, but Feng seemed to understand the art of manipulation better than most, and there was no doubt that was what Feng was doing.

When Winters reported what was going on in orbit, Mathison decided to wait. If the fleet knew about the secret base, then who knew what they would do. Storm it? Nuke it? Rushing to get there held little appeal. The rain clouds provided some protection from orbital surveillance, so Mathison felt a little better. Freya estimated the rains would continue for several days. Convenient.

“He would be a cool officer if he was a good guy,” Stathis said on a private link.

“Yeah. But keep in mind that commissars are political fanatics, so don’t drop your guard. Right now, he’s on our side, but fanatics like that are the worst. The smile can change to a snarl at the slightest infraction.”

“Aye, Gunny. What do you think the HKTs are doing?”

“Hakala is probably sleeping in a nice soft bed and is about to have a nice big, delicious breakfast. Now shut up and eat your yummy, nutritious bug paste.”

“Aye, Gunny.” Stathis pulled out some food paste and snapped it into the helmet socket. It wasn’t really bugs, hopefully. “You know, when you put it that way, I instantly know it’s going to taste like the bottom of a boot after stomping through diseased roaches or rats.”

Mathison did the same. The Aesir food paste wasn’t too bad, and he didn’t have to choke it down like Marine paste. “When have you ever stomped through rats?”

“In North Africa with Two-Five. There was a village that was slaughtered by militants.
